On February 5, 2019, the Virginia Senate passed the bill (1502) that will allow high schools to offer Biblical literacy elective courses as academic initiatives. With more than forty (40) years of experience as a teacher of English literature, I have seen the great need to educate students in this area, and applaud this progress in public education. Western literature is filled with Biblical allusions, symbols, names, quotations, etc., but the majority of students in public education are lacking in this knowledge. Such elective courses will help strengthen students' overall understanding of Western literature.
