During this presentation, I will share information about implementing sensory figures in the context of reading diverse children’s books. By constructing their own sensory figures, and engaging in discussions about using sensory figures, participants (and students) often move beyond sympathetic responses to more empathetic understandings (when listening to diverse texts). Empathy is a component of teaching that is represented consistently in actions as well inactions in the classroom by teachers and students. Engaging in productive relationships with students requires mutual empathy. The ultimate goal of this session is to provide participants with one entryway into improving their students empathetic stance with regards to those who are different or perceived as different.
