As stated below, this unit will focus on a unit that I developed last year that my students really seemed to enjoy. Though the session will involve some talking on my part (hence I checked lecture), I am planning to get participants actively involved in doing some of the activities associated with the unit. I will provide handouts so that participants can use the unit and adapt it for their own classrooms. I will also provide an example of student work. My target audience is primarily middle school language arts teachers, but the idea could work for upper elementary school (and possibly freshman English) as well. Some concepts or topics touched on by this unit include:
reading and group discussion of a YA novel
understanding propaganda techniques and the influence of media messages
using technology to create and craft media messages
working together and delegating tasks to achieve a common goal
