Daily independent reading is one of the best strategies to increase students’ reading fluencies, interests, and skills. However, as seen from interactions with educators and observations on social media, the practice isn’t done as pervasively as it should be. And even for those teachers who do incorporate daily independent reading, their practices can also benefit from fresh perspectives. Therefore, this session will give participants an understanding of the importance and transformative power of daily independent reading, methods for evaluating the inclusivity of classroom libraries, ways to grow and manage classroom libraries, strategies for supporting all students during independent reading, and approaches for authentic assessments for independent reading. The session will be delivered by a high school English teacher and will include lecture, demonstration, book talks, and opportunities for audience members to interact and participate. The intended audience for this session is high school teachers; however, elementary and middle school teachers will find this session beneficial. Strands addressed include Young Adult Literature, Multicultural Literature, Art, Writing, Assessment, Poetry, Technology, and Pedagogy. The presenter will highlight inclusive texts, showcase online apps and websites, and direct participants to online materials available after the session. Participants will gain not only a greater understanding of why they should incorporate independent reading but also directly applicable strategies they can take back to their classrooms immediately after the conference to support their readers.
